How Veteran Savings Network helps with enrollment timing

Per Medicare, your Initial Enrollment Period generally runs from 3 months before the month you turn 65 to 3 months after. A Special Enrollment Period lets some people sign up later without a penalty, for example an 8-month window after job-based coverage ends. Here's the trap for veterans: VA healthcare by itself typically does not create a Special Enrollment Period for Medicare Part B. So a veteran relying only on VA who waits may have to enroll during the General Enrollment Period and could face a late enrollment penalty. Our licensed agents help you figure out which window applies to you.

  • Know your Initial Enrollment Period around age 65.
  • Understand whether a Special Enrollment Period applies to you.
  • Avoid the penalty trap of assuming VA coverage delays your window.

Veteran enrollment questions

When is my Initial Enrollment Period for Medicare?

Per Medicare, you're generally first eligible to sign up for Part A and Part B starting 3 months before the month you turn 65 and ending 3 months after. A licensed agent can help you plan around it.

Does VA healthcare give me a Special Enrollment Period for Part B?

Generally no. The common Special Enrollment Period is tied to job-based coverage, not VA healthcare. If you rely only on VA, it's especially important to watch your Initial Enrollment Period so you don't face a delay or penalty.

What happens if I miss my enrollment window?

You may have to wait to sign up during the General Enrollment Period, and per the Social Security Administration you may also owe a late enrollment penalty for as long as you have Part B.
