How Veteran Savings Network helps with CHAMPVA and Medicare

Losing a spouse is hard enough without a maze of paperwork. We can't approve CHAMPVA, only the VA does that, but a licensed agent can help you understand how Medicare fits with it, so you're not overpaying or caught underinsured.

Here's what the VA says about the key points:

Eligibility. You may qualify if you're the spouse or surviving spouse of a veteran rated permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected disability, or who died from a service-connected disability (and generally are not eligible for TRICARE).

Medicare requirement. If you're eligible for Medicare, the VA requires you to have Medicare Part A and Part B to get or keep CHAMPVA, and CHAMPVA pays as the secondary payer after Medicare.

If you're a spouse but not sure CHAMPVA applies to you, start with our Spouse of a Veteran page.

CHAMPVA and Medicare questions

Who may qualify for CHAMPVA?

Per the VA, you may qualify for CHAMPVA if you're the spouse or surviving spouse (or a dependent child) of a veteran who has been rated permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected disability, or who died from a service-connected disability, or who was rated permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected disability at the time of death. You generally must also not be eligible for TRICARE. The VA sets the final eligibility rules.

If I have CHAMPVA, do I also need Medicare?

Per the VA, if you're eligible for Medicare, you must have Medicare Part A and Part B in order to get or keep CHAMPVA benefits. A Medicare Advantage plan that includes original Medicare also meets this requirement.

How do CHAMPVA and Medicare work together?

Per the VA, CHAMPVA is the secondary payer to Medicare. Medicare pays for your care first, and then CHAMPVA may cover costs you still owe after Medicare pays. The VA also notes CHAMPVA doesn't cover Medicare Part B premiums, so you'd pay those yourself.

Can Veteran Savings Network help me with this?
