Veteran Medicare Resources

Veteran Medicare Resources

Medicare for veterans is not the same as Medicare for everyone else. You have VA coverage, possibly TRICARE, possibly CHAMPVA — and each one interacts with Medicare in a way that changes your decisions at 65. These guides were built for your situation.

Why Veteran Medicare Is Its Own Topic

Most Medicare guides are written for the general population — people with no military service, no VA coverage, no TRICARE. They miss the specific questions veterans need answered: Does VA coverage protect me from Medicare penalties? What happens to my TRICARE when I turn 65? Does my 100% P&T rating change anything? What does my spouse qualify for?

The answer to most of those questions surprises veterans. That's why these pages exist.

VA Healthcare and Medicare

VA and Medicare run in completely separate lanes. Most veterans benefit from having both — but the way they interact changes every decision you make at 65.

VA benefits · Separate lanes · Part B enrollment

TRICARE For Life and Medicare

TFL may be the most powerful secondary coverage available to any beneficiary — but only when Medicare Part B is in place correctly. If you have TFL, this is the most important guide on this site.

TRICARE · Part B · Secondary payer

CHAMPVA and Medicare

CHAMPVA covers qualifying spouses and dependents of certain veterans. At 65, Medicare changes how CHAMPVA works — and missing the right move here creates gaps that are hard to close.

CHAMPVA · Surviving spouse · Dependents

Medicare for 100% P&T Disabled Veterans

Being 100% Permanently and Totally Disabled gives you VA Priority Group 1. It does not change Medicare's rules, timelines, or penalties. This is the most misunderstood situation we see.

100% P&T · VA priority · Medicare enrollment

Veteran Special Enrollment Periods

VA and TRICARE do not protect you from Medicare's late enrollment penalty. Only active employer coverage does. This page explains exactly what counts — and what doesn't — before it's too late.

SEP · Creditable coverage · Late penalty

Spouse of a Veteran: Medicare Decisions

Veteran spouses may have CHAMPVA, TRICARE coverage, or survivor benefits — each interacting with Medicare differently. This guide is written for the veteran's spouse navigating 65.

Spouse · CHAMPVA · TRICARE spouse
